How to Select The Right Impact Wrench?

An impact wrench is a high power tool used to tighten or loosen even the most difficult fastenings, such as nuts, sockets and bolts. They produce a tremendous amount of rotational torque that a regular power driver can’t compete. A high level of torque with minimum user efforts is generated by impact wrenches. They are usually used in cars and trucks for lug nuts loosening, but can be used in any high-timber situation as well. In aerospace, automotive, heavy-duty equipment maintenance, construction projects, vehicle service and assembly, impact wrenches are most popular.

Pneumatic or Cordless?

Considering the impact wrenches on the market, the power option you decide on is a key factor in your final purchase.

The most common choice for impact wrenches are as follows:

  • Battery Powered Cordless
  • Air Powered or Pneumatic

Compressed air is the most popular choice ,from this the word “pneumatic impact wrench” is derived  and it also known as  to as air wrench, pneumatic wrench, impact guns, impact tools, or simply air impacts, are specialized fastening tools that are used to apply high torque to a nut or bolt. By attaching these tools to a suitable powered air compressor, the wrench transfers the air flow to the energy source responsible for accelerating the rotating mass, which then stores the power to be dispersed into the shaft.

Impact wrench – How to choose?

Find out what to look for when selecting an impact wrench. Here are the most important aspects:

  • High/max torque
  • degrees of tightening / loosening
  • metal or composite housing
  • noise intensity/level.

Maximum torque of the wrench

When you can get wrenches with a torque of 1900 Nm, why bother with a torque of 1450 Nm? The higher the value, the easier it will be to operate it.

The Most important question arises: what exactly is the torque? This is the amount of power that the wrench can produce during a short time. The higher the maximum torque, the more difficult screws it’s going to handle.

But – never go too far. If your customers work on a daily basis with screws in “passenger cars,” there is no need to get a wrench with a maximum torque of 2200 Nm. Sometimes there’s no point in additional torque.

Note that the utmost torque is that the value only reached within first instances.  At the highest or best  speed. . The remaining time the torque is lower.

In reality, pneumatic wrenches with a torque of 1500 Nm or 1900 Nm can easily handle the majority of tasks in a workshop or tyre shop for passenger cars.

Degree tightening / loosening – how to understand?

A Good pneumatic wrench will always have various degrees of torque adjustment like tightening and loosening.

Does it matter? Yes, the more control degrees you have picked, the more accurate it becomes to work with the wrench. As a result, the tool becomes appreciably more universal.

Which housing is better – Metal or Composite?

It’s important to bear in mind that the clutch housing and the tool’s body can both be made of different materials. When comparing tools, make sure to remember which pieces are made of composite and which are made of metal.

Metal casings are used on the majority of inexpensive or low priced wrenches, which can even be purchased from DIY stores. This would perhaps be a profit. We use the key in the workshop anyway, and there’s a chance it’ll get damaged or break. As a result, metal could technically do better in such incidents. Metal surfaces are vulnerable to scratches and dents in the first place. These aren’t the only limitations or drawbacks they have. Metal housing  pneumatic wrenches are simply heavier. When working for a long period of time, this is important. Realize how painful it would be to hit such a metal key on a cold morning. Isn’t that an unpleasant feeling?

A key with a composite housing, on the other hand, is normally a little lighter than one with a metal housing. While these are minor variations, they do matter after a hard day of work with an impact wrench. The job is also much nicer with such a tool in the hand than with a heavy wrench. Furthermore, the composite wrenches are much more comfortable to carry.

Do not ignore ergonomics, The noise level of the pneumatic wrench

It is vital to pay attention to factors that affect user safety and ergonomics, such as the noise level and vibration. When selecting a tool for your application, noise and vibration levels are important factors to be considered. What about the noise level?  It can’t be denied that working with a pneumatic wrench can produce a large amount of unpleasant noise. Remember that it makes a noise both within the mechanism and within the part that’s being worked on. The Lower the noise or vibration levels equal a safer and more comfortable user experience.  Hearing protection, such as headphones or ear plugs, is recommended because every wrench makes noise.
